There are about two weeks left in this year’s legislative session and we wanted to highlight two pieces of legislation that can use a little help. What do we mean by help? Well to start off, let’s thank our elected officials for the work they are doing; it has been a long with session and they deserve to get some gratitude. Secondly, let them know there are still bills that could use their help. Let them know what bill is important to you, why it matters, and give a clear ask at the end. Here is a link to see who your legislators are. Reply back to this email, firstname.lastname@example.org, if you would like some support in your outreach.
HB-2740 establishes an Oregon Industrial Hemp Commission. It aligns the state definition of “industrial hemp” with the federal definition and directs the State Department of Agriculture to administer the Oregon Hemp Program for commercial sale and production of hemp. At the start of the month, this was assigned to the Subcommittee On Natural Resources, so if one of your legislators is on this committee, please let them know that HB-2740 is an important piece of legislation to get finished up!
SB- 585 is such a great piece of legislation and it’s a shame it has not seen much movement since April of this year when it was referred to Ways and Means by order of the Senate President. This bill directs the Oregon Liquor Control Commission to establish a Responsible Cannabis Retailer Program to prevent sales of marijuana items to minors. This is similar to a program that OLCC has created for liquor licenses. If you are working in a retail store please consider letting your legislators know this would be a positive program for the cannabis space! More specifically, if one of your legislators is on the Ways and Means committee please reach out to them and tell them why you support this.
Please be sure to stay engaged and subscribe to the bills via the links above to stay in the loop. We didn’t cover all the cannabis-related bills in this Call to Action but you know who did? ORCA… in fact, they made a clever handout that you can click on here that will give you even more info about the status of these bills mentioned and more. If you want to learn more about how you can help ORCA support fair and workable cannabis policy please reply to this email or check out their website.
We will be providing a recap of the cannabis bills at the end of this month, so stay tuned!
As always, we want to thank you for staying involved and we do encourage you to become a member or renew at this time with Cascade Cannabis Association by clicking here. As a volunteer organization, your donations and membership dollars support our work in creating opportunities to Educate, Collaborate and Celebrate cannabis in Central Oregon.
